FOSTERING AN ACAP DOG (PLEASE SKIP IF YOU ARE ADOPTING)

Thank you for opening up your heart and home to a homeless pet! Fostering is one of the most important and rewarding ways to save a life, and make no mistake - when you foster a dog, cat, kitten or puppy, you are saving at least two lives! How? By removing the pet you'll be fostering from a shelter and making room for another homeless pet at that same shelter. Sadly, animal shelters have a finite number of kennels or cages, and a finite number of financial resources to care for the pets that they take in. Unless a shelter has a relationship with rescue groups, they almost always must euthanize healthy, adoptable animals to make room for more. So you see, when you foster, you not only save the life of the pet who comes to temporarily live with you, you also save the life of the next pet who will take the kennel or cage at the shelter from where your foster boy or girl came!

ACAP can also only save lives when we have room; whether it be at our sanctuary (for unadoptable, sick, or hospice dogs) or in our foster homes.

ACAP will provide you with what you need to care for your foster dog, to include veterinary costs (must be pre-approved by the ACAP medical coordinator), medications, flea/tick preventatives and dewormers, and any prescription food your foster may require. You provide regular dog food, attention, and LOVE!  The average stay for a foster dog is 1-3 months, but may be longer if you're fostering an older dog or one with chronic health issues (like diabetes).

We promise to provide you with whatever support you need, and we will do our best to match you with the right foster dog for your home, lifestyle and your own pets!

ADOPTING AN ACAP DOG (PLEASE SKIP IF YOU ARE FOSTERING)

Adopting a pet is a happy occasion and pets provide numerous benefits to our health and well-being, in addition to their love.  It benefits both you and your pet to fully understand the long-term care and financial responsibilities that come with the benefits of pet ownership before you adopt.

When you adopt from ACAP, we ask you to sign an adoption contract that outlines our expectations of the care you will provide to your new dog.  These expectations are:
    1. This dog is being adopted as a personal pet and companion, not as a gift, not as an outside-only pet, not as a chained guard dog, not as a hunting dog and never to be used for illegal or research purposes
    2. You will keep and care for this dog in a safe and humane manner for the rest of its natural life
    3. You will provide clean and dry housing indoors, adequate, fresh food and water and daily exercise
    4. You will provide appropriate veterinary care by a licensed veterinarian as needed, including annual exams and vaccinations
    5. You will provide regular flea/tick preventative and heartworm preventative
    6. You will obey all applicable state and local laws governing control and custody of animals
    7. This dog will not be kept on any property where a "No Pets" policy is in force
    8. You will not debark a dog or declaw a cat for any reason
ACAP strives to ensure that each adoption will be permanent and that the adopter and the pet are the best possible match.  Therefore, ACAP reserves the right to make the final decision in the adoption process.
